Why I'm NOT Buying Windows 7 (or Torrenting it!)
Friday, July 3, 2009 at 12:12PM For those of you who are not normal readers of my blog, you may not know that I currently do everything on my Mac Pro. I don’t use any other machines other than Macs.
I am sick of hearing Windows 7 being compared to Leopard. Why can you not do this? Windows 7 is technology of 2009 and Leopard is technology of 2007. That’s like comparing apples and oranges. If you insist on making a comparison, take a look at this: Snow Leopard vs. Windows 7. Or better yet, $30 Snow Leopard vs. $350 (approx) Windows 7 (We will go with the “Ultimate” version because there is one version of Snow Leopard with everything, so therefore we will get the Windows version with everything)
What’s so great about Windows 7? Windows still runs on DLL’s, the registry (which has to be cleaned, and if you don’t do it right, you’re screwed!), even worst, Disk Defragmentation. Windows 7 is a bug fix. Fixing bugs, fixing UAC, and using some new taskbar. This new taskbar looks very similar to the dock in OS X. (The dock has been around for much longer than Windows 7’s adaptation).
OS X Dock:

Windows 7 Taskbar:

Is it me or do these have way to much in common?
In addition to DLLs, there are also DLL errors! When I was a Vista user, I had more than enough of the DLL errors! Some people tell me that they know how to fix them, but no end-user should have to deal with that.
Snow Leopard is bringing wonderful technologies to the plate such as a wonderful price point ($30 as opposed to $400!), speed increases, 6GB of freed space when installed, Microsoft Exchange support, Grand Central Dispatch (unleash the power of your hardware), and OpenGL (a better way to take advantage of your video card), as well as QuickTime X (pronounced ten, not X), and overall speed increases, AND MORE!
Windows 7 is bringing some stupid shake feature. Why is this so stupid? Because when you move a window a few times, it hides the rest. Why the heck would you want that? Expose is a much better way of doing it, I can’t imagine how much productivity time this feature could loose. Window management with key strokes like Win+Left Arrow and Win+Right Arrow. Wow, it took Microsoft a long time for this as us Mac users have had it for years now! Wow! Extra fonts! Mac OS X has way more fonts then Windows ever had.
Full list of features here. Windows 7 has a mere 30 new features! Wow! Leopard had over 300 (a previous technology beating a newer technology!)!
In essence, there is no way that I will be switching over to Windows 7 because of things mainly like DLLs, Registry, Disk Defragmenter, Viruses, and useless extra features Microsoft adds to dig them out of the deep hole Vista put them in. Windows 7 is a patch. Snow Leopard is a true upgrade. (See above)
If anyone has anything they would like to add in the comments section below, I would be interested in reading them, and responding. Please excuse me, as my fingers are getting sore from typing!
Updates:
- A commenter said (comment has been removed as of today) that you can compare Windows 7 and Leopard. Windows 7 is in beta! Snow Leopard is in beta! Windows 7 is NOT Microsoft’s flagship operating system because you cannot buy it in stores-neither is Snow Leopard.
- I will give credit where credit is due: The Black Box Recorder looks nice, but not anything to make me switch my OS. Same thing with the feature called: Global village (some thing that shows wallpapers from your area). Yeah it’s cool, but nothing I’d rave about.
- Install via USB Stick. That’s cool, but it’s been around on OS X forever.
